NEWARK, N.J. - The Marist women's tennis team began its 2009 season on Friday at the New Jersey Institute of Technology Tournament. The teams competed solely in doubles action on the day. One pairing from Flights A and B reached the backdraw finals.

Sophomore Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) and freshman Maria Eduarda Yurgel (Pelotas State RS) earned a spot in Flight A, while sophomore Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and junior Juliana Boras (Curitiba, Brazil) are in the Flight B backdraw finals.

McCarthy and Eduarda Yurgel won two matches after dropping their first of the day. They defeated Fanny Aizier and Dasa Stanimirovic of NJIT, 6-4. In the consolation semifinals the tandem prevailed over Bethany Boyle and Taylor Holt of Fordham, 6-4.

O'Donovan and Boras dropped their first match of the day as well, but rebounded nicely by winning their next one. They cruised past Caroline Rienzo and Nora Hulton Sacchi of Manhattan, 6-1.

Marist will continue play at the NJIT Tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m.
