BALTIMORE, MD. - In their final game at the Sixth Annual Dawg Pound Classic on the campus of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, the Marist softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-1. Senior shortstop Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) scored the Marist run in the fifth inning.

With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Giordano smacked a double to left center field. She was plated by Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) who singled to left field. Pomes advanced to third on an error by the FDU left fielder.

The Red Foxes totaled six hits, and had a runner on base in four out of the last five innings of the game. Four out of seven runners reached scoring position.

Freshman Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) entered the game in relief of Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.). Schell held the Fairleigh Dickinson offense scoreless over the final 3.1 innings, while striking out three.

Marist will return to UMBC on March 14-15 for two games with the host Terriers and two games against Hampton University.
