Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team led 11-10 with 33 seconds remaining, when freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Thoms (Newark, N.Y.) made the last of her 10 saves to boost the Red Foxes to a one goal victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves, in a non-conference match at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Wednesday evening. In a balanced offensive attack, eight different players got into the scoring column in the match with either a point or an assist.

Senior Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.) scored the eventual game-winning goal with 4:09 remaining in the game off a pass from classmate Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.). It was Begley's third goal of the match and Garland's only assist; she also had two goals in the contest. Begley had eight shots on goal, four ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Garland had a game-high five draw controls, four ground balls, and a team-high three caused turnovers.

Marist boasted its largest lead of the game at 9-6, after the ladies went on a 3-0 run, to take the score from six apiece to the aforementioned margin. During the stretch, junior Morgan Dillon (Freeport, N.Y.) scored a free-position goal with 22:10 to play in the game, senior Carolyn Sumcizk (Syosset, N.Y.) notched her third goal of the season exactly four minutes after Dillon, and freshman Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the game and season, at the 16:11 mark.

Marist outshot their counterparts 36-29, and put a total of 28 shots on goal. The Red Foxes scooped up a total of 24 ground balls, 13 more than Stony Brook, and went 3-for-5 on extra-man opportunities.

With the win, Marist avenged a 22-11 defeat at the hands of Stony Brook from last season. The team improved to 2-0 this season, while Thoms has earned both wins in between the pipes.

Marist will return to action on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m. when the Red Foxes will host the "Friends of Jaclyn" game.

Proceeds will go to the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that works with pediatric brain tumors. Fans will be able to make donations at the game for the cause.
