POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist women's basketball forward Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) was chosen on Wednesday as one of 30 preseason candidates for the Women's Wooden Award All-American Team and Player of the Year Trophy. The junior is the first player in program history to be up for this award.

The 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the 2008-09 Preseason Player of the Year, Fitz led Marist with 18.5 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game last season. She also shot a team-high 55.6% from the field and 86.6% from the free-throw line. Last season, Fitz became the first sophomore to reach 1,000 career points as she set a new single-season scoring record with 649 points. Through two seasons with the Red Foxes, Fitz is currently the all-time leader in field goal percentage at 56.2% and free throw percentage at 84.6%. She also is eighth in scoring with 1,169 points, tenth in made field goals with 423, and third in made free throws with 323.

Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious honor in college basketball. The 30 players chosen in the preseason and others who excel throughout the season will be evaluated and considered for January's midseason list and the official voting ballot released in March.

Marist opens the 2008-09 season at the McCann Center on Sunday, November 16 against Albany. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
