Janczyk And Vess Lead Marist In Outdoor Opener At Southern Connecticut
March 30, 2008
NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Sophomore Matt Janczyk (Bristol, Conn.) ran a personal-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase despite a chilly, gusty wind, to lead the Marist College men's track team at its season-opening competition at Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday. Janczyk led a strong steeplechase contingent for the Red Foxes at the Owl Invitational at Jess Dow Field. He finished fourth in 9:55.62, his best time in the event. Junior captain John Keenan (Centereach, NY), who qualified for the USA Junior Championships in the event two years ago, was sixth in 10:01.12. Freshman Nick Webster (Latham, NY), running his first race after missing the indoor season due to illness, ran a strong season-opener by placing seventh in 10:03.00. Freshman Adam Vess (Cromwell, CT) made his collegiate track debut by taking fourth in the 1,500-meter run (4:02.28), equaling Jancyzk's place as the top for a Red Fox runner on the day. Also in the 1,500, sophomore Conor Shelley (Rockville Centre, NY) was eighth in 4:02.20 and senior captain Mike Rolek (Maplewood, NJ) ran a personal-best time of 4:12.22. In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Zak Smetana (Niskayuna, NY) ran a personal-best time of 16:09.94 and placed 14th as the wind howled toward the end of the day. The Red Foxes will return to action Friday and Saturday at the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton University. Individual Results
