Dennis Healy Departs Marist; Becomes Pitching Coach At Wake Forest
June 23, 2009
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist head baseball coach Dennis Healy has announced his resignation after four seasons to become pitching coach/recruiting coordinator at Wake Forest, effective immediately. Healy compiled a record of 95-116 in his four seasons, including a 53-46 record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play and a berth in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. "I am so appreciative and blessed to have worked at Marist College," Healy said. "I thank President Dr. Dennis Murray and AD Tim Murray for believing in me to give me this opportunity. I will miss the players and coaches immensely, but I know this is a special group that will accomplish great things." In 2009, the Red Foxes reached the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time since 1997. Marist also had a player selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft - senior closer Jacob Wiley in the 41st round by the Cincinnati Reds - for the first time since 2003. In Healy's tenure, 11 Red Foxes were named to All-MAAC teams, including four First Team selections. Additionally, Wiley was named MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year and MAAC Tournament Most Valuable Player in 2009. A Ballston Spa, N.Y. native, Healy came to Marist after serving as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for one season at the University of New Orleans, where he signed 25 student athletes for the 2006 season. Prior to that, Healy served as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at George Washington for five seasons. He began his coaching career at Cleveland State, where he also served as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the Vikings. Healy played collegiately as a pitcher at George Washington from 1993-96. Following his senior year, he was named Second Team Atlantic 10 All-Conference, Second Team All-East Region and Second Team All-ECAC after posting a 7-3 record with a 2.25 ERA, good for 12th in the nation. He also served as the team captain his senior year.
A national search for Healy's successor will begin immediately. |
